Of all the blogs in all the world...

...you click into mine. Hello, Dear Reader, and welcome to My Philmography. "Philmography" is a word that combines my love of film with, well, my love of film (phil- meaning love of, filmography being a list or writing that deals with film. Pretty clever, I know). Let me back up and give you a bit of background on myself.

I love movies. Sure, pretty much everyone loves movies, just like pretty much everyone loves music, food, sex, and the other wonderful things in life. I'd consider myself a pretty average guy, and I love all those things too. Talk to anyone who knows me, however, and you'll learn that my love of movies in particular verges on an obsession.

I also enjoy making lists. The summer before I went to college, I found myself without a job (having been forced to quit the pizza delivery business for my lack of proper driving insurance). One day I was thinking about all the movies I'd seen and loved when an idea sprung into my head: wouldn't it be cool to make a comprehensive movie list? Obviously the answer is no, but I did it anyway. I spent several days probing my memory and looking through list after list of movies, until I was fairly satisfied I'd gotten just about all of them. With the click of a few buttons, I had an enumerated and alphabetized Microsoft Excel spreadsheet of 900 or so full-length views I could remember having seen.

Well, what good was a dead list? What good was the list in the first place? Well, I didn't know, but I decided to continuously update it. Sporcle, an website with lots of fun quizzes, fueled my movie passion. I watched a disgusting number of movies that summer, but eventually it came time to go to school. Unfortunately, every tour and info session had failed to mention that there wasn't really time at college to watch movies every day, so I was forced to act like a normal person again and only watch an occasional movie. Still, the list grew week after week. About a year and a half has passed since I first compiled the list, which now names 1127 different movies I've seen. That may or may not seem like a lot to you, but that amounts to over three months of non-stop movie watching (actually, that's pretty gross to think about--and that's not even counting movies I've seen twice, three times or more! The horror, the horror). It's a fairly private obsession, but most of my close friends know about my ridiculous movie list.

A few weeks ago, someone mentioned creating a blog to document my film-watching habits and opinions. I thought this kind of funny at the time, but the idea stuck in my mind until tonight when I decided, hey, what the hell? I've got nothing to lose, and it could actually be fun. If I build it, they may come. I do all this crap anyways, and so what if a few people read it? So what if no one reads it? Frankly, my dear reader, I don't give a damn (oddly enough I haven't actually seen Gone with the Wind).

So that's my story. I'm not yet sure how I'm going to use this blog thing, but I hope you'll stay tuned. After all, tomorrow is another day!

-Ben

P.S.  If you got the five movie references/quotes in this post, congratulations!
